The House Blessing…and Beyond

July 6, 2010 By Barbara Densmore Leave a Comment

Jim and Jeanie have spent much of their lives in search of sanctuary. After years in a high-maintenance haven, they found a remarkable gem – the perfect home for their next phase in life. They wanted to celebrate their good fortune.

A house blessing would be the normal ceremony, but it became quickly apparent that there was much more than the house to be appreciated. And there was more than a blessing to be done.

The couple had some specific wants for themselves. To share their story. To stand in wonder at this crossroads, and to appreciate the journey in life that had brought them here. To set some intentions for themselves and for the new house.

And of course, they wanted to celebrate. But they wanted to celebrate with their guests, not in front of them. They wanted their friends and family to be partners in the ceremony.

And so it became, to paraphrase the once famous Buzz Lightyear:  The “To Infinity and Beyond” House Blessing (you can do that when you work with a celebrant…:)

One one hand, the ceremony was full of meaning and symbolism. Summer Solstice, the day of  the ceremony is a day of concentrated energy, a day when people would historically clean out the dross of winter and prepare for the growth and ripening that summer offers. On the other hand, it was pure Jeanie and Jim: relaxed, genuine and heartfelt. And their honoured friends.

And despite the solstice rituals, the powers from above seemed to approve of the evening as well, including the smoke detector and sprinkler system.

Welcome to your new sanctuary, J&J. Make it SO…!

“I am SO very happy that I did the ceremony. I feel like my work with you cauterized what would have otherwise been an open wound. I can’t thank you enough…”

People had great things to say about the ceremony – they loved that it was a reflection of us – so thank you so much for making that happen.  It filled us with joy.

Jaylene & Greg's surprise wedding
So that was without a doubt the best day of my life, and I can’t tell you how many people have commented on how great the ceremony was. Many folks told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to! The ceremony was so us, and how we look at the world.
we managed to fit most of their passions into Eli and Megan’s very organic ceremony…no hand sanitizer..
Having Barbara perform our ceremony was probably the single best and most important decision we made about our entire wedding process!
Kirsten and Ian, family and friends ceremony
“The words and the actions were all Mum. People commented over and over that this was the most meaningful Celebration of Life they had ever attended. And mum would have loved it…from the stories right through to the symbols, it was her to a T.”   Lauren and her family hosted their celebration of her mother’s life in a comfortable home setting.
MF's Celebration of Life
We are unique in our own way and nothing we do is cookie cutter. We are looking for an officiant who can do things a little differently. We pride ourselves on putting in the effort that others won’t.
Shereen and Matt, high tech, high standards
Our day was more than we could have asked for because of Barbara – the ceremony was the perfect mix of funny, touching, meaningful and memorable.

GS's Celebration of Life
We’re so grateful for the great job you did in pulling together our lives and making our ceremony so personal, so thoughtful, so us. The good feelings and emotions that blossomed that day continue to linger in our every day lives and you played a really important role in that, so thanks. You were great and able to go with the flow, which was so important to us.
